Dark academia is a name for a picture that a lot of people carry around in their heads. In it there is an old university in the rain, a library with a ladder up to the top shelf, a tweed coat over the back of a chair, and a lamp left on past midnight. It is autumn most of the time, and somebody is up late with a book that was never on any reading list. The name took off online, but the feeling is old. It is the feeling of being up late in a beautiful building full of books and not wanting to go home.
A dark academia candle is any candle that tries to put you in that picture, and there is no rule about what goes in the jar. The jar is usually dark and the label usually looks as if it came out of an old book, but two candles sold under the same name can smell nothing like each other. The name tells you which room the maker had in mind. It does not tell you what you are going to smell.
What it is not
Nobody searching for it wants to dress up as a professor. They want their own reading corner to feel like the best room in an old library, at the hour the library would normally have thrown them out. The word dark puts some people off, but the dark in it is only the dark outside the window, and the lamp is on. Most people go looking for it in autumn, and the picture works just as well in January.
Where Night Library fits
We did not set out to make a dark academia candle. We set out to make candles for one real hour, the one when the house has gone quiet and you are still up with a book, and we named each one after a spot in the house where you might be sitting. If that hour is what you mean by dark academia, then we are the same thing under a plainer name. A library at night is where the whole look comes from, and ours is the one that never closes.
The three candles on the After Dark shelf are the ones people usually mean. They come in amber glass with a gold lid and a black label, and they are written for the deep end of the night. Midnight Study is the desk lamp and the last page. The Lamplit Shelf is the row of older spines you always stop at, where the light is warmer. The Reading Chair is the velvet chair that keeps your shape all winter.
One thing we are strict about is saying what is in the wax. Every jar carries a line that begins with the word Pours, and it names the scent in plain English. Midnight Study pours blackberry vanilla, The Lamplit Shelf pours beachwood, and The Reading Chair pours cashmere musk. The name sets the scene and the Pours line tells you what you are actually getting, so nobody has to guess and nothing arrives as a surprise.
